You can always cancel a hotel reservation.
Make sure to check their cancellation policy.
No, they will not charge your card till you leave.

Have fun.

Most LV hotels will charge you for the first night when you make the reservation. They will give you a confirmation number, use this # to check on your reservation before you go or to cancel the reservation(in which case they will give you a cancellation #)

With most LV hotel reservations you have "at least" until 3 days before to cancel the reservation and get a full refund. In most cases it's one day. About the only exceptions would be "very" special events such as New Years, some hotels require at least a 7 day notice to cancel a New Years reservation.

Even if you receive a promotional package deal, where you have to pay for the whole package up front, you can still cancel the stay and get your money back so long as you cancel in advance according to the rule(again. usually 1-3 days)

The bottom line is, you're NOT going to lose any money by making the reservation. So long as you don't wait until the night before to change your mind.

Later: "Jack is mostly correct" >NO, Jack explained exactly that in some cases it's three days in some cases one and in some rare cases they require more time for a cancellation. "Japou" simply didn't read my "whole" answer.

Jack is mostly correct. Many hotels will allow up to 24 hrs prior arrival to make a cancellation (done that).
Some is 48 hrs.. So just ask the hotel about their cancellation policies.
Also, if this is what you have in mind....DO NOT BOOK A HOTEL FROM A TRAVEL AGENCY (Expedia, Orbitz, etc. etc.) They will charge you cancellation fee.
Book directly with the hotel., and btw, prices are usually a bit lower by booking directly (no fees).

Depends on who and how it is booked.
Use some online sites and they charge one night up front when you book. Use a Debit card and $250-$500 is "reserved" upfront.

Each hotel has their own policy
