I have a 500 watt power supply, and I bought 2 additional hard drives for my Pentium 4 (2.8 ghz) system with 1 gig of ram. The system has a few PCI cards that require power directly from the power supply, like my graphics card, so therefore I don't have enough power plugs, from the power supply, to go to my new hard drives. Can I simply buy a sort of power supply splitter from somewhere?

Yes, you can.

Just make sure you've got enough juice! If you've got 2 PCI cards that need their own power input, your PSU should say that it is "SLI / Crossfire Ready".

As mentioned there are Y cables and you can even make one if someone have a burned out PS and just steal the ends and wires and splice them into yours.
The main concern is not overloading out outputs. Some PS are dual rail, which means they have two separate 12 Volts.
I would say go here and read this article;
http://www.motherboards.org/articles/guides/1487_1.html
This will help you understand the label on your PS and be sure you not overload it. But, just talking I think a 500 Watt should handle a few extra wires.

I did want to add. If, you find a burned out PS to rob wires, open it up and look inside. It really help a person understand. Most all ground wires go to one and the same solder point. Your other wires go to one in the same point for their specific voltage. A Dual Rail will have two separate places the 12 Volt wires go.

No, you need to buy a new power supply with the required connections. Messing with the power without knowing what you are doing can fry your hardware.
