Rubber lipped plecos love veggies and potato's are on the list. They would probably do better getting greener veggies though. Zucchini, squash, lettuce and spinach are all favorites. I would place the food in the tank after lights out and weight it down so that it will stay on the bottom of the tank. Remove any leftovers in the morning.

There are several plecos known as rubber lipped or rubber nosed cats. See if this is him. If not he's most likely in this site somewhere.

Hope that helps

You can keep more than one of them together, but I would not suggest it in a 16 gallon tank. Rubber lip plecos can grow to 10 cm, and basically outgrow that size of tank. A 20 gallon would be much better to house a single one. Plecos are all nocturnal, so they mostly hide and rest when the lights are on, and come out to do their business when the lights are off. That is completely normal behavior for any pleco to seem shy.

Most likely he is a member of the Chaetostoma genus. Called bulldog, bullnosed, rubber, rubber lipped...... I've got a what I think is a "blonde rubber lipped pleco" in a tank. He is kind of shy and an okay algae eater. Honestly I needed another pleco to completely clean the glass as my tank gets lots of sunlight.

He will eat most anything, and needs veggies and some meaty foods. You'll be able to tell if he is getting enough food by noting. If he has completely cleaned the whole tank of algae, and if he is always out scrounging for missed flakes when you feed your fish.

Things he'll likely eat:
-zucchini slices
-broccoli stems sliced*
-leafy greens*
-sinking algae wafers
-sinking catfish pellets
-crushed peas*

*Will initially wait a day or 2 for it to soften.

Things other pleco eat he'll not touch:
- carrots
- wood
(My clown pleco on the other hand loves harder roughage, but he is a "wood eater" by nature.)

Hm. Is your tank cycled and what other fish do you have in there. If you have fish like goldfish or pacu then dont put vegies or things in there because they will eat it too. If not pretty much any vegie you throw in there will be fine. You can try buying algae wafers but once again pacu or goldfish or even other small fish will try to eat it. Plecos are nocturnal so they eat the food at night. btw.. right now you wanna feed your pleco, but in a few weeks when algae develops in your tank your pleco will make so much poop you will have to remove it yourself

I have rubber lipped pleco in my 55 gallon tank. I have just simply left the light on in the tank, and fed him the regular tropical flakes I give the other fish and now 4 months later he is huge and was just tiny when I bought him.
