My husband recently purchased a used 2003 Chevy S10. He's trying to change the wheels out, but for some reason, he can't get the rear wheels off. He removed the lugnuts already, but there seems to be some sort of 'lock' in the center of the rim. He's tried hammering it to loosen it, and also spraying WD-40 on it, but it's not budging. Does anyone know anything about this?!? Thanks in advance for any help!

I should also mention that he removed the front wheels with no problem. Once he removed the center cap from the wheels, the center of the back wheels look different from the front wheels. It's hard to explain, but they are definitely not budging. He sprayed and hammered, and even kicked both sides of the wheel (with steel-toed boots on of course). It's not budging the slightest bit. No, he's not a mechanic, but he has spent several years working on cars, and never seen anything like this. Is there any way this could be some sort of security feature?!?
Thanks again.

Aluminium wheels will bond to steel.

1. Secure the vehicle on jack stand.

2. Allow half hour for the WD 40 to work.

3. Put on some heavy boots.

4. Turn around so your back is to the vehicle & with you heel, give the outside of the tire a hard kick.

5. Continue until the wheel breaks loose.

6. Upon reassemble place a coating of neverseize on the back of the wheel.

Good Luck. . .

he did the correct thing [ spraying with oil and hammering ], this is a very common problem on many vehicles. he needs to use a very large hammer [ 5 to 10 pound ] and hit the tire and rim from the back very hard as he is spinning the wheel. it is also helpfull to put a couple of lugnuts back on loosely by hand so when the tire becomes loose it will not fly off and hurt you.

Hit the inside outer edge of the wheel with a sledge hammer, they tend to wedge onto the axle with corrosion.Happens almost every time.

That's the axle, not a lock.
Hit the backside of the tire with something heavier.

It might just be a tight fit.

Yes..he needs to pop off the middle "cap" with a screwdriver then he should have a special crowbar that removes the middle "lug nut."

Put the lugnuts back on and take it to a mechanic! He obviously isn't one!
