It would have a big effect on our ecosystem because they are very large animals--the Blue Whale is the largest animal in the world. They consume large amounts of sealife (especially krill and plankton when it comes to the Blue Whale).
If whales were to become extinct, the sealife that it had previously eaten would be become uncontrolled and grow without anything to decrease the population.
In the case of krill and plankton, if enough of these organisms inhabited the sea, they would consume a lot of oxygen in the ocean. This would decrease the oxygen levels in the ocean and many other sea animals could be affected and also die off due to the low oxygen.

Whales, like every living thing down to the smallest microbe, are part of the planet's ecosystem. When we lose a species it effects everything. The more we lose, the fewer options become available for the existence of human beings.
