Sponge filters are very cheap, under $10 even for a large one in my area. They run off of an air pump, so you would also need one of those if you don't already have it, but they are cheap too.

They can vary in price from $5 to $20 for the pond and large aquarium models.
There are ones that run on air pumps, water pumps or both. There are also pre filter sponge filters for your canister or HOB filters (these work well, especially for maintaining bio filtration between cartridge change). These filters have been overlooked in recent years (including myself up until 7 years ago); however there are a lot of models that compete effectively with many more expensive filters.
Also note that no all sponge filters are equal. This is an area I conducted a lot of experiments in several years back in my aquarium maintenance business and found many to clog more quickly and not maintain bio filtration as well. The Hydro Sponge filters by ATI came out on top in these experiments (as well a few patent infringing models).
I would suggest reading this article about sponge filtration:

Here is a site with several models:

Prices are fairly inexpensive, ranging from all in ones like The Dirt Magnet series @ about 5 bucks to ones that require you to also buy/add an airstone for it to function, such as the Hydro series which go from 5 to 11 bucks. Of course you need an air pump to run these, but they also can be obtained for just a few dollars.
Remember, you'll need to run a sponge filter appropriate for your size aquarium. An underpowered one will give you some benefit but not the full range if you get one too small.
Hope this helps. :)
