You need something the compound will disolve in, but not react chemically with. Also, like disolves like!
If you're looking for a specific solvent, look up the organic compound on www.chemexper.com and it's MSDS sheets will tell you what it's soluable in.
Also, you can try finding the organic compund in the Merk Index... it will tell you how to recrystalize.
