No, I downloaded for several months off sims2.com and lots of things, and it didn't mess up my game. Since its an offical site, its very reliable. There's just a few things to remember:
+Sometimes the meshes aren't included and the item/sim you download might look funny, but you can easily delete it
+When you download a lot of stuff, it will slow the load on your game down, but won't affect the overall run speed.

depends on who uploaded the stuff. Some people put hacks in their games. Then upload to the site. When you see something you want to download, check what is in the file. Most stuff on there will not affect the game, but it can.
