Violence should be avoided except in cases of self-defense. If we would all practice the golden rule and if we could legislate morality, we wouldn't have wars.

1. When protecting those that can not protect themselves, and it is the only way of protecting them.

For the use of deadly force: when someone's life is in immediate peril and there is no other way to stop the threat.

I will not get into the morality of the use of lethal force in war - that's another discussion.

To defend one self or a friend. Just stop when the adversary is beaten, or quits.
