are you following directions on heater? if yes then you may need a new thermocoupling. 1st check to see if gas co. cut off your gas for nonpayment of bill, or see if gas works elsewhere. there are 2 types of WH"s , the newer ones have 2 screws that have to be removed, that is called " sealed combustion" type.Older ones are easier,Remove cover, turn knob to pilot, w/ 6" adjustable wrench unscrew t-coupling,main burner, and pilot tube. Remove burner assy. the thin copper tube is your t-coupling. with hand, pull out of burner assy.replace w/ 24 or18" thermocoupling. Reinstall burner assy and connect the 3 connections.A 10 minute job for me..... If you have a sealed combustion type, do basicly the same thing but replace w/ t- coupling for your specific water heater. note: write down model# & brand of WH when you go shopping.

listen to trekkie sounds like there is some good experience.
some said fallow directions . becareful with gas i know thats common sence.ok now maybe you over looked this but are you holding the button down maybe hold it down some and there might be some air in the line. why did it go out? did some air blow it out or did the gas get shut off? i think its called the thermo cuppling as mentioned by the plumber and those are not real expensive .there is not a lot of room to work in there .use a flash light and a mirror to look and see.
home depot and home improvment building centers are helpful to.

you may have a bad valve or thermistor. the valve will have to be replaced if it is bad, as will the thermistor, a temperature reactive piece of metal which allows the valve to open when it needs to be re-lit. the same is true for a gas furnace. call a service man to have it checked. the valve and thermistor are both replacable components, but only someone who knows how should do so.

I think you can call either your water or electric company and they'll send someone out.
