It shifts from park into each gear, but I can barely feel it at all when I shift. The only way that I know which gear I'm in is through experience in driving automatic transmission cars. My gear display panel shows the car as being in reverse when I have it in park. If I press the accelerator hard enough, I see a little bit of smoke/smell hot transmission fluid whenever I stop at a light. Are these common symptoms for a older car, and what can I do to fix the problems? I am mechanically enclined so any tips will help. Thanks in advance.

If your still on the original transmission, your lucky it hasn't failed yet. You may have a transmission oil leak that's blowing back on to your hot exhaust pipe and catalytic converter under the car. This may be a good time to drop the transmission oil pan and replace the transmission filter if it hasn't been done in a long time. Then install a new pan gasket and torque to pan bolts carefully in criss cross fashion to the proper torque specification. The early Ford 4.6 Liter engines also had spark plug wire failures, so if you have a rough running engine that shakes when you try to accelerate etc, you should put a new set of plug wires on it if the wires are still the original ones. Ford had a problem with the plastic coupling breaking at the transmission's adjustment cable attachment to the accelerator linkage on top of the intake manifold.

Adjust your cable/linkage. At the transmission, where the linkage connects should be room for adjustment or if it is floor shift it may be by shifter.

1. Place shifter in PARK

2. Remove linkage from trans

3. Adjust linkage so shaft/pin slides easily into trans.

4. Click shifter through gear selection. Trans. detents should coincide with selector on shifter.

Find a good transmission shop, and have them evaluate your transmission. If nothing else, your indicator is off and needs to be adjusted. Note: I did NOT say take it to AAMCO, but a GOOD transmission shop.
