I count to myself or use a metronome. I've been playing 45 years or more. .So my dexterity is really good. but years ago, I got so frustrated in the beginning.. Studied with a jazz guitarist and after a few months of playing, I asked the teacher,"am I a guitar player yet?" he laughed and told me I would continue to improve my entire life.. I was 10 or 11 at that time. He was right. What I would recommend is reading out of clarinet books or guitar books. That's how I improved my playing skills.. Exercises can be mindless too.. Have fun with it.

Most guitar or music playing merchandise selling stores sell a spring loaded device that allows you to strengthen your fretting fingers that fits right in your hand.I believe you can buy one for TEN (10) bucks or less.It has individual pads so you exercises each finger. They will probably have it behind the counter. I believe they come in different spring tensions.
