I want to build a brick wall but don't know the tools for making the walls perfectly straight and vertical. I know I can use a rope as a guide for making the walls straight in a horizontal direction. Any suggestions?

I would use a laser. You can purchase one at Home Depot really cheap.

I don't want to be rude but if you don't know the tools for making it straight chances are you do not know many other important factors in building with masonry. I suggest getting a book from the library or purchasing one it will be worth it.
The thing is building a brick wall has several parts to it many of them come way before your concerns with the part sticking out of the ground being straight. It really begins with the layout of the footing. As a professional I believe a small brick wall is something the average homeowner can accomplish with patients and time. Get the book and follow the directions. Most importantly above all else is that the footing is of proper width and depth for the wall. If not all your hard work will look like the leaning tower of Pizza in a couple of years. Good luck, there is NO shortcut to doing it right.

unoforna is right! I have tried quite a few times to lay brick with terrible results. Laying brick is a three dimensional project. The brick must be level and square in all axis, X,Y&Z. in addition to being not only plumb, but square as a whole, ie, not twisted. The mortar must not only be mixed with the proper mixture, but not too wet or dry. AAGGGGHHHH. I QUIT!!!
Even though I do not like to pay the price for a professional brick layer, I recognise that I must.

Get a 6 ft level and keep checking the vertical bubble as you build. A horizontal rope will work fine.

the tools to use would be a chalk box and a level. Snap a chalk line on your horizontal surface for your starter course of brick and plumb and level the remaining courses as you go.

what you need are speed poles on each side. Do you know how to lay out your joints. Hard part is setting everything up.Might want to get a mason if you want it done right.

4 foot level is all you need, my friend!! Check about every four or five coarses of brick.
