Firstly grap a copy of the Business English Certificate Exams. They give you a good idea about the topics normally covered. It also gives you some standard question formats you can use to teach.

Also remember that business english is not business, but communicate in work and business situations.

Ignore too much background information. This is important, and many teachers try and teach this, but students usually seemed to be bored by too much of it. Some is good, especially is students ask, or have work experience.

Think about your student's learning style.

Some students like to think and analyse, so give a lot of things to think about or read.

Some students are creative, and so creative situations are good too.

Think of business games, such as negotiations or selling.

Role play is useful.

Most importantly, most business english books leave out basic definitions. They might teach marketing, but they don't say what marketing actually is. It is worth adding these in as they are quick and useful.

I like to add in cultural comparisons. For example, give the students a list of values at work, eg efficiency, hard work, communication skills, teamwork, etc. Get them to choose which ones are most important and discuss why.

Surveys like Myers-Brigg type indicator or I have a good one for sales people are useful. They are interesting for the students to do and provide a source of discussion.

Yes -- dump the IM and jargon. Business English is taught and used in complete sentences. Teach your students how to write letters, memos, email that works, short and long reports and how to respond to and leave voice mail. Business and professional communications are what are used in the real world -- and you won't impress your CEO using IM.
