They wont have you drawing intricate picture or images. and if they do they will teach you high. You dont need to know how to sketch before going in. It's expected that most of what you do will be with a T-square, straight edge, mechanical pencil, protractor, compass, eraser and stencil. Get your self some architectural stencils with bushes and trees if you're worried. The only non-circular or non-straight edge things that you'll be drawing are electrical mechanical floorplans.

You'll also be using a flat snake. It's a bendable snake but flat where as you can draw squigally lines no problem.

Trust me. they will teach you how and what you'll need to draw. No Worries.

If you love architecture and know that everything else involded is what you want, then go for it. I have never been able to sketch and allow other people to even have a hint at what the heck i was trying to convey. Look at Frank Gehry's sketches : http://www.sonyclassics.com/sketchesoffrankgehry/

They are not the cleanest and most presentable sketches of architects. However, sketching is a major part of the initial design process, but I look at it more for my own personal development. One needs to be able to draw things and have it mean something in their own mind/eyes. When I am trying to show people things that I am thinking of, I tend to do "quick hardline drawings" rather than sketches. I will actually use a straitedge and take more time to make a more precise drawing if need be.

On the other hand, sketching is a great technique to use as an architect and I encourage you to take some drawing or sketching classes while in college, but don't beat yourself up it if never developes. You can do just fine without it, but you will have to compensate in other ways to express your ideas, such as verbal.

Good Luck!

yes...you will take foundations classes. And despite what people may think or tell you, anyone can learn to draw...
There is a lot of model making and you use drafting tool...Savannah College of Art and Design is a very good choice. It is one of the only schools in the country that you can go through a 5 year program (it is 7 everywhere else). You don't need to submit portfolio to get in, although you can submit one to get a scholarship. They have over 27 different art majors...I would suggest brushing up on your math....

prepare for a long bout at school. prepare for long hours at little pay. prepare for alot of dissapointments in your climb. architecture is a very tough nut to crack out there. be ready for a hard road with little rewards.
