I want to buy one for my friend as he has a very slight problem with a small puddle forming from time to time in his basement.

But I don't think he would view my solution as a solution if he had to turn it on every time the puddle forms. I would be so much better if the thing turned itself on.

But do modern dehumidifiers have this option?

yes they do. However, you will not remove enough moisture in the air to prevent puddles in a basement. Your friend needs to find out where and why the basement is leaking.

He/she should get some professional help with this. A dehumidifier will not handle this kind of a load. Good luck

I just checked mine...its a 300 dollar whirlpool...the knob does have a more dry/ less dry/ continuous run knob...it also has a drain pan that you can connect a hose to, and just have it go into a drain, and never have to mess with it.
I spent too much for this stupid thing, check walmart when the humid weather is about to start.
