Try breaking it up into two problems:

-2 < 1/x
3 > 1/x

Look more familiar now? I'll do the first half here:

Step 1. Multiply both sides by x to bring the variable to one side of the equation:

(x)-2 < 1/x(x)

Step 2. Divide by -2 on both sides to isolate x

-2x/-2 < 1/-2

Step 3. Reverse the inequality sign to account for multiplication or division by a negative value (hint: don't do this for the other one)

x > 1/-2

Your final answer will be in the form:

1/-2 < x < solution to other half

If x is positive 1/x>-2 for all x so 1/x<3 and x>3
if x is negative 1/x<3 for all x
so1/x>-2 implies 1<-2x and x<-1/2
so the solutions are x>3 and x<-1/2

The formula to find the area of a triangle is: Area = 1/2 the base times the height or A = 1/2BH. If you know the area of a triangle = 60 sq ft and the base = 6 ft, what's the height? 5 ft 10 ft 72 ft 20 ft A=1/2BH or 60=1/2 ( 6 x 20) The formula to find the area of a triangle is: Area = 1/2 the base times the height or A = 1/2BH. If you know the area of a triangle = 60 sq ft and the base = 12 ft, what's the height? A.) 5 ft. B.) 10 ft. C.) 72 ft D.) 36 ft A=1/2BH 60=1/2 (12H) H = 10 Take the equation and manipulate the number to make the equation easy to solve. Got it ? -2 < 1/x < 3

substitute = for <

-2 = 1/x, -2x = 1, x = -1/2
1/x = 3, 1 = 3x, x = 1/3

substitute < for =

-1/2 < x < 1/3

The answer is not what x equals but the possible ranges that x can equal.

-2 < 1/x < 3
multiply every thing be x
so
-2x -2x<1<3x
-2x<1 and 3x>1
x<-1/2 and x>1/3
