John & Paul BOTH described their collaborator, George Martin as The Fifth Beatle. I'm guessing they are CORRECT because they ARE the Beatles, you know. Pete Best was the original 4th Beatle and he was fired from the band and gave not one contribution to anything original they ever done. George, however, advised them and participated on almost every album they ever recorded. Billy Preston was definately an 'unofficial' Beatle and truely added to their sound his own creative input. Now, years later the same can be said for Jeff Lynne (The 7th Beatle?) But to give Pete Best credit when the Beatles themselves didn't is just wrong and ignorant, imho. :-) The Beatles say it was George so it was George. ;-)

Considering Pete Best and Stu Sutcliffe were in different variations of the Beatles that excludes them from being the "fifth" beatle, cuz they were actual Beatle members!
It was actually there producer George Martin, who in his own right was an accomplished classical musician. He played a major role in forming and shaping the Beatles "sound"

George Martin - their recording engineer. He played "behind the scenes" on many tracks. The "fifth Beatle" was a term to describe a disk jockey named "Murray the K" when he was hanging out with the Beatles for a while. The Beatles didn't like that very much, but they were gracious and just shut up about it.

There were some others counting more than five. I think Pete Best the drummer was the only official beatle besides the fab four. I think they were called the Quarrymen or something when they had the guy that got killed after being jumped who would have been a beatle.

Billy Preston
"Nothin from nothin leaves nothin"

Because he was black

Pete best was an original drummer but he thought that they wouldn't go anywhere so he left the band at the beginning.

Billy Preston helped out a lot with many tracks later on so that is why I think he makes it as the fifth beatle.

George Martin their producer. He played piano and came up with many arrangements for songs especially songs with orchestrations. "A Day in the Life" and "I am the Walrus" are two good examples of George Martins brilliance.
