Why do people call it degradation for women to be potrayed in revealing clothes and act as prostitutes and strippers on televiion but no one considered to be degrading if a man acts as a buffoon or clown, is potrayed as a violent criminal such as a rapist, or is slapped on a tv show by a woman?

Because it is not about the act itself. In the emergent third wave of feminism, women as prostitutes, strippers and being sexy is seen as part of the power of women.

The degredation is about who controls it. When women are forced into prostitution by men, then it is degredation. In fact this is pretty dangerous situation for women. Much of the money earnt can go to the controlling. In addition they may be forced to work in unsafe conditions and have unprotected sex.

It even becomes the case where the judges sentencing prostitutes to jail, themselves visit prostitutes.

When a women chooses to be a prostitute (and many women are happy to be prostitutes) they can choose how they work, what they do, how much they charge and so on. In this situation we prositutes are earning above the average.

So basically any act can be empowering or degrading.

When guys act the buffoon, and are forced into this role, it is the same.

Thank you for your question. Ultimately I believe women have the power of NO. I believe women are in control in all that they do and if there were women out there happy to be strippers or prostitutes they can be in control by starting their own strip club or brothell. How many men do you read about, hear about or talk to who will admit they have been violated in any physical way by a woman? I don't feel degraded by women who choose prostitution, porn careers, strip for money, dance at peep shows, pose naked for play boy, model, participate in beauty contests, or anything else. I'm my own woman - I don't care what other women are doing as long as they are making the choice to do it. If they want to be in control, they will be. That's another choice some women will have to make. If a woman slaps a man he probably deserved it!

Unfortunately the only way to control Hollywood is to turn the TV off. I do not feel it is any more acceptable to show the average man as a clown than I do to portray the average woman as a sex worker... I have noticed that men are being portrayed as shall we say simple on TV (King of Queens comes to mind)... Hollywood is out of touch with average people but if you are looking for sympathy or a way to change it you will not find it on here... As you can tell from the answers above.

Really, what's worse: A prostitute or a clown? Consider the impact here. As for men as rapists, this is often done on law dramas, where rape cases make sense, and women don't rape that often by comparison. And does it really hurt that much when you get slapped? I slapped guys about eight times a week in middle school (the violent years, now behind me), and they were cool with it.

Because women have no respect for their bodies. So they dress promiscuous and do bad things like go out on dates, flirt with strange men, dress very badly to get hired for a job, starve themselves to death to stay thin, and sell themselves and pass AIDS onto men who use them.
