I'm trying to apply for jobs, but a 12 year gap is hindering my prospects,.. (depression - don't ask),.. how can I safely tell a 'white-lie' in order to stand a more realistic chance of getting a job? Any constructive ideas welcome, but if you're gonna be smarmy and/or sarcastic, then please don't bother. I really need some creative, sensible & intelligent responses, thankyou.

well i havnt lied but i find that being honest with your employer is best explain that you suffered from a long term illness and that you are now better and want to move on in life and make something of yourself. they will appreciate your honesty and theres no way of avoiding them knowing you have this huge time gap as employers want references at least if you have explained so theres no embarrassment further down the line. hope this helps

Don't lie, even a little. Just list your employment history. If the experience you show gets your the interview, THEN explain the gap if the interviewer asks. You could get by saying "I was working freelance for a while."

Just say you were running your own business from home or something like that. I would not get into it unless they probed you.
