Wow. I can't even imagine a situation where I would not have the balls to just drop out versus trying to do some elaborate scheme to get "expelled".

Besides, there are plenty of ways to get expelled WITHOUT needing the assistance of a professor...

So, no, it is not normal. It is pretty pathetic, it shows a complete lack of character and spine, but it is not normal.

Actually, I'm aware that there are some students whose parents forced them into college against their will--and they can't just drop out or the folks would put them on the street.

So they want to get out in a way that proves their parents were wrong.

Most choose to flunk out. If you're a student who wants to get expelled, then OK, go ask your professor. I know that I would find it refreshing to have a student who wanted to be honest about taking command of her/his own life--regardless of my opinion of the wisdom of the decision.

The student also could find ways to get expelled from the student code of conduct (or whatever that college calls it) which usually is published in a student manual or handbook.

Note that many of the ways to get yourself expelled could also get you arrested; possession of drugs, intoxicated on campus, firearms violations, felonies. A better plan would be to find offenses that only apply to the college, like disrupting classes.

(This question is making me feel rather rebellious!)

No. It's not normal. And it's not the professor's job to help you; it IS their job to report any activity for which you could get expelled, but otherwise, leave your professor alone. They're busy enough without such antics.
