Well that depends on what type of music you like. It also is a matter of opinion and could be argued forever. Jimi Hendrix was an innovator, Eddie Van Halen was the ultimate innovator. He spawned a whole generation of shredders and changed the way guitars were manufactured! Randy Rhodes and Stevie Ray Vaughn and Dimebag are all gone too soon, RIP. Steve Vai, Eric Johnson, and Joe Satriani are amazing. My personal favorite is Zakk Wylde. Man that guy is unbelievable and he pays respect to the legends.

I won't say Jimmi Hendrix if that's what you are waiting for. How about Stevie Ray Vaughn or Roy Clark? (Roy Clark played behind his back.) Santana and Van Halen weren't too shabby either.

Vitto Bratta (from While Lion, hair band from the 80s)

Too bad he disappeared from the face of the earth...but it suits his genius character :)

Also, Eddie Van Halen.

I think Chet Atkins, Tommy and Phil Emmanuel, and Stuart Fraser (Noiseworks) would be up there with the best. Others I can't think of right now.
