some 3D animators have very good experiences in 3D animation, but others don't. Sure, the 3D cartoon shows you see today aren't that great probably because it takes So much time just to develope one episode, let alone a whole series. so they probably think "hey, it looks 3D-ish enough for kids to like it" since their main target are kids, they don't think kids will give a care if it is good quailty 3D animation or not, as long as it looks 3D-ish. Also, 3D animation is basicly squares, tubes and other 3D objects we see today in real life. of course it be stiff, sometimes animators have a hard time making it look like the real thing or, like i said before, they don't care about the quality as long as it looks "good" to kids.
2D animation is drawn and animated on paper (now it's going to computers but there are still a few who draw on paper) on paper, it is WAY easier to get the affect you want than what some 3D animation can do. You're not drawing with squares and tubes, you're drawing with your hand and the style you want it to be in and you have better control over the mouth movement, the body movement and all kinds of stuff that is animated.
3D is just popular today because we are getting into the world of newer technology and people like newer stuff. Sure, maybe 3D may not be the best thing ever, but people have different tastes.
2D old cartoons are a classic. Tom and Jerry, they are a classic cartoon, Bugs Bunny, Micky Mouse, all of them are classic and the old folks (some) don't like these newer cartoons but prefer their cartoons that they saw when they were a kid, plus even kids today like the old cartoons because they're funny. Even I missed the old cartoons, they had better plot stories than what some cartoons have today, plus I think the animators knew what funny was and how to approach it to kids and eventually to everybody.
though, the fight between 3D and 2D animation will fight on. It just all depends what your tastes for animation is. I think 3D should be for the movies and 2D be for the cartoons on television, but that's is my opinion.

honestly it doesnt matter to me there actually aren't alot of 3d animation studios doing regular cartoons. So even if it is computer made its similar looking to hand drawn. Plus even as a kid I couldn't sit through some of Tex Avery's shows cause they were boring and that was ten years ago. Kids now a days actually have quantity and quality shows to choose from. Luxuries alot of us never got.

As technology advances, so does everything in our lives. When we were younger, the "classic" style cartoons were the peak of technology that kids liked watching Saturday mornings with Agro, but time and television taste change, and children these days find 3D animation to be appealing as they have not experienced cartoons like we used to.

I agree for the most part.2D animations are great especially those from anime...and the classic Cat and mouse chase-Tom and Jerry
Jimmy Neutron is quite dorky. But,not all 3D cartoons are stiff.Have you seen Final Fantasy or Onimusha?Check them about and then see if you feel the same way.

Tom and Jerry, Bugs Bunny, Road Runner, etc are all CLASSICS and will always be popular. In my opinion the characters of todays cartoons look distorted and just out and out weird looking. Sponge Bob Square Pants is just goofy. I don't understand it's popularity.
