Children do have rights as well as their parents. You just need to educate yourself on school policy's and need to learn to speak their language(school board). If you are not satisfied with the answers to your questions the staff at the school is giving then ask to see it in writing or call the school board to see what they have to say.Try and see if you can find out what is in your schools policy and schools mission statement.Your principle has a contract with the school see if he or she is fulfilling the contract. If there were no kids in school then they would not have job's. Sometimes school and staff can't relate to their students because they don't live in their neighborhood

By reading your statement, and basing my assumption on your grammar, I am guessing that your knowledge of school law is relatively limited. Students do have freedoms, allowed within the rules of the school. Schools have rules in place in order to allow all students a distraction free education.

A little more background about the situation would help. If your child brought a gun to school, the principal is right, your child has no rights. If your child is involved in a protest the circumstances are under the jurisdiction of the Principal, as long as it does not interfere with the rights of other students.

Parents with students under 7 are entirely responsible for what their children do, students over 7 are responsible for their own actions, and if they break the rules then they are held accountable.

The key to these rules is that the students follow rules, just like in a "grown up society." The primary focus is education, everything else gets put to the side, especially if it is interfering with education. You are in school to learn, not socialize. Socialization is simply a bonus of being in an environment where there are other people.

Hmm, that's a little disconcerting.

I don't think it should be told to a child's face, but they really don't have many rights, and not in the political sense. Of course they have rights been it comes to humanity: the right to live and be happy, etc.

Kids can try standing up for themselves, but they would probably just be brushed away and stamped as misbehaviour. Hell, if they do ANYTHING in referring to utilizing a political right, they could just be seen as acting up.

But rights like those don't matter much to kids under the age of 12. All they want to do, and should do, is have a fun and happy childhood, which is your job as a parent, which is why you're here.

That principal was definitely in the wrong by saying it to your daughter's face, and I would go in to that school and let that person have it. Tell other parents about it, and make a fuss. That was wrong and this person really worried and saddened your daughter (by the sounds of it) for no reason. Explain to your daughter that she doesn't have to worry about her rights until she is older. Put a smile on and tell her its her job right now to be happy and educated. Tell her "Let me worry about the rest."

This is referring to if you're daughter is under the age of, say, 10. If older, then that principal was definitely just flat out wrong.

In school, rights are a little different than they are in everyday life. Schools have to try to keep a safe environment for every child they are responsible for. It is possible that whatever your child did was distracting to other kids or was not appropriate. Freedom of Speech in schools does not allow you to say anything. If your daughter was being punished at the time, and she was acting out, that could be another reason why she was told that. The principal was probably just trying to deal with the situation and he felt your son/daughter was getting in the way.

For a principal to tell that a child has no rights at school is very wrong. In a way she is verbally abusing your child. they have to listen to the children. Then explain nicely to the child so that it will be understood. Just because that they are the principal and teacher they can say and do what they want is wrong. They have to explain to the student that the school has certain rules to be followed. That there are consequences if it is dis obeyed. Parents has the right to ask questions and school practices. You are the one paying for the education of your child.

Children have VERY few rights at school.

If a parent has issue with the curriculum then it is up to them to attend school board meetings and become active in the school so their voices can be heard.

90% of the time children are not right and neither are the parents. Just because some one has heard something on TV does not mean it is fact.

If there is something you think is wrong do some research on it (more then I saw it on Oprah) and then discuss it with your childs teacher. It is up to the parent NOT the child

No, that's absolutely wrong. I am a high school student and I have all of those rights, and I always have. Sure, we're not allowed to do or say certain things, but that's only if it is vulgar or disrespectful to others. The principal was wrong to say that and you should tell the school board and take it to them.

everyone has rights and the principal was probably just trying to maintain some control in the sittuation . Of course children do have rights at school . they have the right to be safe .happy and healthy . and that is about it . i find now a days you go to a school to complain you get ganged up on by teachers ,principals and etc ... it is better if you complain to your local school board and to the local media.
