He was the first actor to portray him anywhere, and it was on a CBS TV Show called Climax! In 1954 they did an adaptation of Casino Royale. He portrayed an American 007 named "Jimmy Bond". I don't really consider that he was THE James Bond.

As an actor he was okay, but he certainly doesn't stand out in my mind as being particularly noteworthy. But he would be the first 007 until Sean Connery came around in Dr. No in 1962.

Yes, I remember, only because of the trivia involved (the fact that he was the first to play James Bond).

Another interesting piece of trivia, Casino Royale was the only Bond movie to be made 3 times. The first as a TV episode of Climax Mysery Theater, then as a comedy spoof, and finally as a part of the "offical" Bond series.

RIP Barry Nelson.

He also played 'Stuart Ullman' in 1980's The Shining. Just another overlooked character actor. Sad.

He was the 3rd best person to play James Bond. And the 1st ever 007..... shame for him to die. James Bond fans should take a moment of silence now.
