No we should not. Communism is an ideology that seeks to establish a classless, stateless social organization based on common ownership of the means of production. This means that the government owns basically everything! Our government is okay and needs some changes but do you really want all of the government to own everything?
Communism was already tried. How did that work out? Does Hitler ring a bell? I mean we don't want millions people dying again do we? This would be a very bad idea if we tried communism.

The U.S. spent many, many years fighting Communism in the cold war. Since the USSR has failed, the U.S. has normalized relations with other Communist countries. I find this to be very odd. People of my generation were taught to hate Communism. The slogan was "Better to be dead than red". Apparently, Communism is only a threat to our country if there is an intention to undermine Capitalism.

Corporate and political corruption are the biggest threats to our way of life at present. I can't believe people are accusing Republicans and Democrats of turning to Communism. The whole movement of free trade without restrictions, the way political candidates are funded, the lax method of choosing our voting machines, the corruption in our lax credit laws, corporate corruption, and the lack of representation of our citizens all add up to huge threats to our democracy. Whose fault is all of this?

I never felt this way until Bush became president. He has undermined this country to the point that I don't even recognize it anymore. I don't understand anyone backing this administration. Things are way out of control. Extremely poor leadership. Actually, nonexistent leadership.

NO yet I believe we are moving in that direction, our law makers do as they want to our president does just as he wants ,they change the laws to fit there own needs.Ride down town anywhere and watch the law is everywhere .There is no where that you are not under the watchful eye of the police. They even tell us how to raise our kids.I still believe we have the best country there is but I do think we are giving up our rights,if you look at the changes that have taken place in the past fifty years there's no way you can overlook it. Some many bleeding hearts keep limiting what we can and can not do,I've all ways felt like we all have our own lives to live we have to answer for our deeds, but I should not have to live up to everyone elses .We are all different we all take different roads with different endings, and we should not be told how to get there by bleeding hearts, checks and balance not dictatorship.

I think we are rapidly going communist in the US. Over the last 12 years Republicans increased the size of government by 40% and put vast regulations on the backs of people, like teachers. My wife is a public school teacher and thanks to new Republican laws she must spend much more time in paperwork and meetings and list many more students as "special ed" in order to comply with regulations. These are signs of communism taking hold. And this is what American want since their leaders impose them. Indeed, Abe Lincoln began this push when he required that govt take over building roads and infrastructure even though states had made that illegal as the govt did such a poor job. But Lincoln used the power of law to force people to do his will, just as the govt does now. Karl Marx wrote Lincoln a letter of praise for his communist approach giving power to the govt. He was a Republican.

I know i would like to take up on the challenge.
but would everyone here consider giving up their freedoms? shopping in excess? Driving where ever you wanted (for no reason, or to go the mall)
Ideally, communism should be better for the environment, less consumed = less produced less waste and less pollution. however, Russia was a prime example where it didn't work.. .and pollution overwhelmed their country side.
I keep threatening my kids.. that i'll cut the cable and internet off for three months. Just to see if I and they can make the best of things. Perhaps.. .they might just become more creative? creative thinkers? Productive too? or even appreciative of the endless hours they spend on MSN!???

Communism doesn't even work in a family situation - how could it work in a wider world?

I come from a family of 6 kids - each of us is so different in terms of goals and accomplishments. I worked 70 hours per week and skipped vacations for what I have - my brother dropped out of college and really only wants to make $60K a year. I would not have worked that hard if I wasn't focused on my personal goals - and I certainly wouldn't have worked that hard so that my brother could skate.

Personal property and achievement through hard work (and luck!) mean something and should be worth some reward.

Sure, let's all try mass murder. Sounds like fun, eh?

Actually, all types of state-based communism must, at some point, become violent and repressive regimes - enforcing their will against those who do not accept state control over their lives. Communism always descends to authoritarianism.

I'm very supportive of the idea of communal living, as long as it is voluntary. Once it becomes state policy, and requires conformity of all citizens, it requires enforcement by violence. At that point, it is a horrific and dangerous phenomenon.

As we all know, true communism, as Karl Marx outlines, has never been truly implemented. I believe the idea is a good one, however implementing this form of government in exchange for the fascist government that ours has become, poses a near impossiblity. There are now too many with too much to lose, and let's face it, this is such a "me" world we live in, what are the chances of anyone willing to make the sacrifices needed? Perhaps it would work in it's truest form, but as we have seen time and time again, corruption is always the flavor of the day. An interesting idea indeed.

Try? We've been forced into it over the past 25 years via the hippie era drug addicts of whom many have D's following their last names, and currently hold seats within our House, and Senate:( Thus I strongly urge you to research the history of communism, and after doing so if you still think it's a worthy form of government, then there will be no doubt in my mind that you're not of sound mind...
