As individuals, we can do nothing on a large scale, and a lot of the organized charities are nothing but money making machines with most of their donations going to raising more donations and paying off the heads of those charities (not all,but a lot).

I decided a few years ago that helping one that I know about is better than trying to efect a change that I believe would be futile, so I encouraged my daughter to "adopt" a girl through Comapssions International. I send $40 a month, and she and the girl exchange letters and pictures.

While not a large scale solution, it is what I can do, and it is better than donating $40 to some charity where on 25% of the money is actually used to help the unfortunate.

MOst people don't care about anything other than what in their reach, Society is a big ladder, the people in the middle are trying to get to the top while a the same time trying to keep from falling down, the people on the top are trying to stay on top, and the poor have no chance in hell to advance, this ladder is a way of life for most of the world, many like you and i would like to help, but sadly there are not enough of us, it's just another cruel reality

Pretty sad really but the problem is corrupt government and big business, look at the astronomical profits the oil industry is making, there the ones that need to give back instead of helping the bureaucated government stick there nose where it dont belong. Really theres nothing you can do about it. SAD!!

I think do about helping; I believe that it is important to act on whatever scale you can. If you can effect a huge change, that is good; but just because you can't doesn't mean that a small change is a bad thing. If you think it through, enough people making a small change IS a big change, and it has to start somewhere.

Part of the problem is that we hurl money and free food at them, leading to a decrease in things like infant mortality, which causes an increase in population. This can be seen in countries like Ethiopia, which has had a net increase of almost 1,000,000/year to its population since Live Aid. This rate of increase is entirely unsustainable(and will also have disastrous effects in regards to human involvement in climate change).

I once saw on a television show that if everyone in the U.S. above poverty level would donate 20 dollars a month, every kid in Africa could be in school. Kind of makes you feel like a big meanie...

Check out a site called "Ryan's well"
He started in much the same way as you, trying to find a way to make the biggest impact without individual sponsorship

give a man a fish you feed him for 1 day...teach a man to fish you feed him forever. If you were Oprah you could just build new schools in Africa...sigh..but we can't all be her.

Maybe join the Peace Core or something like that.
