I don't mind them. Kind of funny that casually wearing it is still the norm in some parts of the US. If I wore a cowboy hat, I would feel like a poser because I'm not a cowboy.

I agree with you. I grew up on a ranch and even owned cows. So, I'm about as close to a real cowboy as anyone on here can get. I think they're uncomfortable and look stupid. I also think riding horses is highly over-rated. However, theoretically, they will keep your head cooler just as those funny hats chefs wear.

I'd love to wear a cowboy hat because the sun affects my eyes badly. Cowboy boots I wore when I was a teenager and in early 20s. Not anymore. I think I'd still wear them but its not my style these days.

The hat has many uses above and beyond looks. A felt hat keeps you warm in the winter and keeps rain and snow off your face, and off your neck. A straw hat keeps some rain off your face, but it helps immensly to keep the sun out of your eyes and keeps the head shaded.

As for being a cowboy, there should be a distinction between the profession and the lifestyle/attitude/culture. I wasn't exactly raised in a saddle, but many of the values instilled in me are more closely atuned to the cowboy way. I may not punch cattle for a living, but I wouldn't call myself a poser, either.

Nope. I think cowboy hats are awesome! I've liked them since I was a little girl. I don't think you have to be a cowboy to wear them. I mean, aren't they just a way to keep the sun out of your eyes when you're outside?

I live in the "southwest." Southwestern Pennsylvania, that is. I like cowboy hats. I don't wear one. It would look out of place around here.
I like the old style cavalry hats the First Cav wears. I think the entire military should switch to those instead of flying saucer caps or berets.

Well it's just their style. Some wear dreadlocks, others wear leather clothes, cowboys wear cowboy hats...

Cowboy hats are worn for the same reason sombreros are --- to shield the head from the blazing sun..
