A tampon is a great substitute for a pad if you have dance rehearsal. It isn't too soon to start with a tampon, so don't worry. You can use them on any day of your period but be aware and remember to take them out at the right time otherwise you are at risk of something called toxic shock syndrome otherwise known as TSS, which is a potentially fatal RARE but SERIOUS illness which can kill you if you don't use tampons properly. Hope I helped.

Use a tampon! Make sure you put it in right though, otherwise you won't be dancing anywhere. When I first used tampons, it took a few trys to get it in there, where it was supposed to be. It may seem like it is really far up there, but as long as you still have the string on the outside you are ok. If you don't have it in all the way it will be pretty uncomfortable. So, try it out first. And, just so you know you can pee with them in. Hehehehe, i know that may sound silly, but my friend and I were unsure when I started, so I had to test it out. No one tells you that sort of thing, because it is supposed to be understood. Good luck at the dance recital!

Go for it... Use a tampon only for a short amount of time since this is your first time. Get some for teens that are not that absorbent. If you get super absorbent they will dry you out too much. When I first start i used the OB w/out the applicator that way I knew what I was doing. Good Luck

Dear Dancer,
+ Oh, my HEAVENS! That web site should be renamed "being ignorant" coz that's what the info you received IS! That sort of misinformation was the reason "we" began (the "new science" of) Women's Medicine in the 70s! (I'm a former nurse--presently a Healer.)Too many "old wives tales" out there scaring too many young women.
+ Yes, yes & YES! You can use a tampon ANY time you like. Whatever makes YOU comfortable is what matters.
+ I'll never forget MY frst period. My Mom got ALL excited &, as *she* couldn't use tampons (no idea why) she thought the same would be true of me. So she bought me the "works."
+ In those days (the early 70s), "minipads" had yet to be invented, so we'd get this BIG, BULKY "pad" that we'd have to clip to this contraption similar to a garter belt--snaps and all.
+ As they were separate from one's panties, one had to keep adjusting the pad, lots of leakage probs--not to mention it felt like one was trying to walk with a little loaf of BREAD between one's legs--UGH!
+ I was also an athlete and remember being SOOO depressed (& NOT from hormones either!) The very *thought* of having to endure that, once a month for the next 40+ years *almost* had me consider "ending it all!" (Not joking.) I mean HOW, for heaven's sakes, was I to play tennis, run track, etc. in my skimpy, tight-fitting uniform shorts without the whole WORLD knowing what was going on?
+So I went to my Mom, told her I could not STAND having to wear a "napkin" and "isn't there anything ELSE I can use?"
+ To make a long story short, Mom told me about tampons, telling me I was welcome to try 'em, "but don't be too disappointed to learn you're just like me."
+I'm happy to say I was NOT "just like Mom," had NO probs insering it (just read and follow the directions carefully) and came back downstairs, SKIPPING for joy! ("You STINKER!" I remember Mom saying. )
+ Regarding "how far" to insert it? Be sure you buy one of the brands that come w/ an applicator (there are a few w/out) and just push the applicator in as far as it goes--ie, til it disappears inside the OTHER tube that has the tampon in it.
If you can feel the tampon inside of you, you've not done it correctly, so try again.
+Good luck, m'darlin', and WELCOME TO WOMANHOOD!
+May you (grow up to) be "Healthy, Wealthy & Wise!"

It's best to ask your doctor, because there are risks if you don't use the right tampon, and it's only your first period.
But if you don't ask your doctor or a professional (which I highly recommend) use the least absorbent tampon, and don't keep it in longer than 4 hours.

Ive never heard of you not being able you use a tampon, on your first period, it probably was meant for girls who weren't ready for there periods, or unsure what to do. so if your comfortable with tampons then use them.
