it appears that you defaulted on the loan. The government has the option of withholding your refund as well as garish your checks. However, ask your loan provider to send you an amortized schedule to see whether the loans were reduced by the amount of your refund. If it does, then there is nothing you can do. If it doesn't then call the IRS to find out who held your refund.

if you have a tax form look for the 1-800 # for the IRS. call and ask. if no form look in the phone book under govt and find the #.

I'm not sure how you can know that unless/until the IRS sends you notification to that effect.

You can call the IRS, but you really never know if the anser is correct. I'd say just assume they are taking it, and if they don't, plan to turn it back over to pay what you owe.
