Either really strong charisma, a clear message, and strong leadership, or lacking that, a willingness to bend over for anyone and everyone (and to sell your soul and sell out the government to special interests) to raise the money to build enough of a machine smear any and all opponents though use of media, front groups and TV ads.

It takes time and patience to deal with the public and the prying eyes of the press into every thing you have ever done... unless you are a war starved chimp named Bush, then it takes nothing but a marble for a brain and some good cocaine.

Ah. Must be: born in this country, not naturalized;35 years old (minimum age) ; A LOT of back-breaking work; a genuine desire to serve your country; a conviction that you can contribute something of value to your country; and maybe the rest of the world; and oh, yeah... a little education would be useful. It's (obviously) not mandatory. And speaking strictly for myself here, at least one screw loose! What a job! You could not MAKE me do it! Ever notice, a President-elect bounds up the steps to his new home, and a couple of years later, looks twenty years older?

The same thing as it's always taken to win and be successful (with very few exceptions) - connections. Beyond that, I think it takes a massive ego, and a spouse who's willing to put up with total crap and drown his/her ambitions to help put his/her spouse into the limelight. Don't believe me? Look at all the first ladies, and then tell me again.
