China is the popular choice, but it still have many hurdles to get through first.
China is the country most likely to start a war. USA doesn't start "wars" it picks on little countries it can beat, so we can't consider that the same thing. China has every chance of its economy falling apart and breaking in civil war or being bogged down under the increasing weight of corruption.
On the other hand, its increasing wealth and technological sophistication assures it superpower status if it overcomes these hurdles.
Power is more likely to be built up in blocks rather than by individual nations. If China, Korea, Japan and Taiwain were highly united they would represent a great power. But in their love of money and bullying countries, China is more likely to work with the US than oppose it.
The middle east, along with other muslim nations lack the technical expertise to be a direct threat to the west, but if united through language, religion and problems in relationship to western countries could produce a power capable of threatening many smaller countries.
Latin America (which is increasing including parts of the United States) is becoming an increasing united. With stronger left wing sentiments there are force to be reckoned with.
Russia has the technology but is politcally weak and directionless and is not likely to join other powers at the moment.
Europe only seems week. Europe has the ability, economically, technologically (Europe makes more weapons the the US, and Britian is the second biggest weapons exporter after the US) and in military terms to check any other power.
India is the dark horse of this scenario is India. India, like China, is interesting because of its growth (not its raw power). But we need to wait and watch how India progresses. Probably far slower than China with more internal conflict.

Nobody is 'sure' to become the next superpower, but China's chances are quite good. However, there are factors that could prevent China reaching that status. Demographics are potentially a serious problem for it. We talk all the time about how the aging population is a problem for the US and Europe, but because of the one child policy, China will eventually face a much higher ratio of seniors to working age population than the more developed countries. And the increase in wealth in China even today has done little to improve the lives of hundreds of millions who live in poverty in rural China. I don't say China can't resolve these problems and become a superpower, but it far from certain.

Australia is already the superpower of the Pacific and Oceanic region of South-East Asia, doling out $8 billion per year to countries like Vietnam, Indonesia, China, India, Laos, Cambodia, Solomon Islands, Nauru, Tonga, New Zealand, Fiji, Phillipines, Tahiti, Samoa, Kiribati, Papua & New Guinea and Cocos (Keeling) Islands.
Australian Nicole Kidman is the richest and highest paid actress in Hollywood, paid $4 million for a 5 minute Chanel television commercial and commands US$15 million per film.
Australian media baron Rupert Murdoch controls 70% of the American news print/TV/ cable/internet services and is currently worth US$16 billion.
Game Over.

China is well on the way with 10% annual growth and just recently overtaking America in exports. It is a large country with well over a billion people and massive investments in production. It owns a large share of American companies through the stock market and could send America into a depression tomorrow if it wanted, with obvious negative affects internally as well. It has entered the space race and making lots of progress in science. As the effects of the one child policy propagate through the generations then some slow down in development will occur, but it will be positoned very strong by then.

I am going to say either India or China, possibly even both. They both have booming populations, albeit poor ones. They also have growing economic bases, growing industry, and far less restrictive environmental laws. While I don't agree with their enviromental laws, a lot of major corporations do, as it saves them money and destroys the earth, which they don't care about it anyway. Time to climb off of my soap box.

It's a race between China and India. China already owns the US, in terms of dollar reserves, so that's pretty much done and dusted. India has greater resources in terms of the English language and cultural integration.
