Wow i had actually never heard Albinoni's Adagio in G minor before....you are right, it really does describe sadness...i cant even express the right words here...it has like almost an essence of sadness about it...and its still so beautiful all at the same time. Thank you Pavic for introducing to me to yet another piece of great musical art. :)

And i wish i could answer your question but sadly i really dont know that many classical music songs, but i do know one that i have always liked and that has always reminded me of sadness, its a song called "Rose" made for the Titanic soundtrack...but its not just the movie that makes that song so sad, it just has this melancholy-ness to it...and unfortunately i couldnt find the version where its played by irish flutes (which is my favourite version) but i did find this cover done by someone playing the piano;

I just thought i´d paste the link here, cuz im not sure who wrote it or plays it or anything really...but i really hope this helps. :)

I have to agree that Adagio in G Minor is about as sad as a piece of music gets. I didn't even know the music until I saw the Mel Gibson film Gallipoli. The juxtapositioning of that music with the slow motion images of WWI trench warfare was amazingly powerful.

Samuel Barber's Adagio For Strings... maybe I'll get there someday...

The music itself, not the lyrics or the meaning (if it's in a foreign language) would be Franz Schubert's "Ave Maria."

For purely instrumental, classical music, the well-known "Moonlight Sonata," in C# minor moves me to tears, if played with emotion.
