You will need some kind of license or application with your states DMV. As stated above the kind of license or application will vary by state. For example in WI to operate a moped of 50cc or under that goes no more than 31 mph you don't have to have a license needs this:

If an individual wishes to operate a moped, but does not hold a Class D driver license the following is required:

Must be at least 16 years of age
Must have completed an approved driver Education course. Sponsorship is required if under the age of 18.
Class D knowledge, signs, and vision tests Or a valid Class D instruction permit
Apply at customer service center DMV customer service centers accept cash or checks only. Credit cards are accepted for online and phone transactions.
Proof of name and date of birth
Proof of identity
Proof of residency
Proof of legal presence, effective April 1, 2007
Pay fee

Here's one from Nevada:

A moped is a vehicle which looks and handles essentially like a bicycle and is propelled by a small engine which produces not more than 2 gross brake horsepower, has a displacement of not more than 50 cubic centimeters and is capable of a maximum speed of not more than 30 miles per hour on a flat surface.

You must have a normal Class C or higher driver license to drive a moped or motorized bicycle on a public street. You do not need a Class M license. Mopeds do not require insurance or vehicle registration. If the moped is more than 50cc, it is considered a motorcycle and you must have a Class M license, registration and insurance.

Check your local laws.

i do not understand SC regulation extremely, yet the following in Virginia it really is in accordance with engine length. A 50cc or larger engine calls for that the motive force have a motorbike license, and some thing smaller does no longer. They promote 49cc mopeds extremely because of 50cc-regulations. For one which ought to flow as quick as 45mph i'm wondering you'll want a motorbike license, even notwithstanding it really is not complicated to get.

Assuming you are in the US, licensing of mopeds are regulated by the state. So, you need to check the laws at the state level.

My understanding is that if the engine is under 50CC you do not need a license. That's why the pocket bikes are 49CC. Check your local laws to see what they say.

That depends on where you are.
In NH, you need a license.
It may be an Operator (auto), Motorcycle or "Moped Only" license.
