To work as a team each individual member should feel valued and respected by the other members, but most importantly by the team leader. The team leader should praise individuals both in front of the other members and privately. It's important that the team leader sees the individual efforts everybody makes and what their strenghts are. To work with their strengths makes the team stronger and gets a better result. Also for team members to take more responsibility (step up) once in a while can improve team spirit and productivity.

In order to get motivation from your team you need to prove your self as a leader.

You need to be knowledgeable in what the tasks are that they have to accomplish and willing to help when they need. If they know you will help and they will not be punished for not knowing something they will come to you before there is a problem and things will run smooth.

Also the most important is to remember even though you are the leader of a team you are still part of it and your actions a team only functions when all are doing there part and everyone is willing to help everyone.

As a leader you net to set that example and get down and dirty working side by side when the time calls for it.

A leader leads, not follows behind and questions.

Good leaders remove obstacles from the path of their workers. Good leaders encourage and don't pick at things. Good leader suggest strategies and with a genuinely open mind, hear what their team has to say. Good leaders don't use clap-trap terms like excellence or world's best practice ... they do things not just talk them up. Good leaders have a good hard laugh at themselves at least weekly.

I'd say, "What's in it for them?" Are they going to get praise out of this? A sense of accomplishment? A raise? Recognition? Then you aim your speech to them with those ideas in mind.
