Leeds has a good mix of areas - some are really nice and others are terrible.
Some rough rules of thumb - the further from the city centre you are the nicer it is, north and west Leeds are better than south and east Leeds. Postcodes 16 and above are generally the better areas.
The best parts are to the north of the city - Bramhope, Guiseley, Roundhay, Moortown, Shadwell, Alwoodley and surrounding areas. Once out of the city and into the surrounding villages it's much nicer still. Again, places to the north are the better areas - Thorner, East Keswick, Bardsey, Bramham and surrounding areas.
Broken down by postcode...
LS1 / LS2 - City centre, riverside apartments are nice
LS3 to LS5 - West of city centre, not so nice
LS6 - High student population, high crime rate
LS7 - Not nice
LS8 - Mixed, closer to the city centre isn't nice, away from the city is nice
LS9 to LS11 - Not nice
LS12 / LS13 - Mixed, some really rough parts,some not so bad
LS14 / LS15 - Within the city boundary not so nice, outlying areas are nice
LS16 - Mixed, some very nice parts
LS17 / LS18 - Primarily nice, some very nice parts.
LS19 to LS24 and LS29 - Outlying areas, all nice
LS25 to LS28 - Neighbouring towns, mostly not bad, some rough patches. Respectively the towns are Garforth, Rothwell, Morley and Pudsey.
Best place - probably Ling Lane (LS17), known as Millionaire's Row, need a healthy bank balance to move there.
Typical prices - small run down back to back in the worst areas £60,000. Reasonable semi in a reasonable area £150,000. Detached in one of the nicer areas £300,000. Exclusive property in the best areas £1,000,000.

Not too sure anywheres safer than bradford where i spent the first fifteen years of my life before moving to australia, its a lot safer here maybe you should consider moving further than Leeds because thats not really too safe anymore either like most of the UK these days

Beeston - famous for bomber/s. Elland Road (nearby, see map) - famous for soccer hooliganism and relegation/s. Knostrop - famous for pong/s (sewage works). Water Lane - famous for coloured street lights. Go see for yourself, but not alone. Then come to lovely Brummagem.
Aaaaah! you mean BEST, I misread your Question. Sorry!
