If the Tax Credit office knows you are entitled to back payments, they will give you the money - you don't have to ask. They will either send you a cheque or, if they have your details, pay it directly into your bank.

You can file amended taxes for each year you are eligible for the credit...but becareful make sure you don't owe for other things...if you claim this you open yourself for a review of your tax liability.
