I really had fun in Jaipur. Riding an elephant to the Amber Fort (the animals are treated well, by goverment regulation) to see the Palace of the Mirrors and the amazing gardens (with fountains)...Snapping pictures of the Palace of the Winds, Staying in the fabulous Mughal Sheraton hotel, Buying gems and having silk clothes made for you in the market, going to textile factories and watching carpets being woven, visiting the Astronomical observatory and the City Palace , Enjoying snake charmers and the calls of wandering sadhus that want to smear you with mud, driving past terra-cotta buildings where people sit on the roofs and wave and smile. It's pretty awesome.
Also, though, if you get a chance, nip over to Nepal's Kathmandu. The crowds there are far less intense, they are used to strange-looking Americans, the mountian-views are incredible, the monkeys prevalent, the food good (khino fruit, yak cheese, sambhar, chappati...) and the native peoples give you great deals on souveniers (less high pressure than in Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, or North Indian towns).
Warning: Do not stay in Agra (Taj Mahal region) for more than a day trip. The air is so polluted, that if you stay any longer, you are likely to develop an upper-resp. infection, a head cold, and perhaps even nosebleeds. I was there with 30 others in February, and we all got the same symptoms, which dissapeared after we had been out of the city for 1/2 a day.

It depends during which period you would like to visit India. Since climatic conditions in different parts of India differ, a suitable and proper answer can be given only after knowing the period you propose to visit India.

There are many places and that also depends on your likings. If you want to visit the forts and old palaces then u must go to Rajasthan. If you feel like seeing the beaches, then go to Goa. If you want a cold place then Kashmir and if you want to visit the Taj Mahal then go to Agra. We have all kinds of heritage stuff. It seems that India was born in the lap of nature.
