The easiest answer to this question is sometimes. Picture the painting, "The Last Supper" by Leonardo da Vinci.

Or this website may be clearer:

This painting has been criticized, praised, and blasphemed all the same. Thousands of documents have been produced explaining the meaning, production, mathematics, and aesthetics of the painting. Go to Google and search for "The last supper" Leonardo and you will find hundreds of thousands of articles written about the painting.

Here's what the painting is trying to say, I'll try to keep this under a thousand words ;). Da Vinci painted this picture as the reaction of Jesus' disciples when he told them that one of them would betray him.

First, look at Judas, in the second group of three from the left. He is wearing green and blue. He is holding a bag in his hand, foreshadowing his immediate betrayal of Jesus to the Romans after the supper. He was also a treasurer despised by many people in the community as a treasurer.

Next, look at Peter in the blue standing above Judas. Peter is holding a knife, also foreshadowing his involvement in Gethsemane during Jesus' arrest. Peter becomes very violent during the arresting of Jesus.

Mary Magdalene is seated right next to Jesus, as would a wife next to her husband. Many scholars have attempted to say that Jesus and Mary Magdalene were married; however, no real records have been found.

The symettry of the painting is found in most of Leonardo's paintings. The semi-circle above Jesus' heads acts as a symbol of holiness and greatness, much like a halo.

In the background, you can see a trail leading to the mountains symbolizing Jesus' raising from the dead and ascension into heaven after his death.

All information listed here is in reference to the Christian faith that was accepted by many during the time of Leonardo da Vinci.

So yes, a picture is definitely worth a thousand words. However, literature is also a work of art worthy of its own thousand words.
