a cpu doesn't have anything to do with memory. And, the information you gave isn't descriptive enough for a good cpu replacement recommendation. You have to know what socket the motherboard has before you choose a cpu. If it's pretty old, you might want to get a completely new system. Then the first question would be, do you want a Mac or a PC? In either case, you would want a 64-bit cpu, at least 80 Gb hard drive, at least 1Gb DDR400 ram, and SLI capable video card. You would want a good sound card too with at least 5.1 surround capability. If you get a PC, you might not want to get Vista because of compatibility issues, but it will get better as more updates come out, so eventually it will be better than XP. Whatever you do, DO NOT get an E-machines or an HP or anything else from Walmart. They will fall apart more than any other brands. Also, walmart's computer prices are twice as high as everywhere else. If you get a PC, I would recommend having a local store build it, and for a second choice, go with Dell. If your son knows how to build his own pc, you can get parts @ http://www.zipzoomfly.com That will be the cheapest route. If you want a Mac, go to http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore

If he's doing MMORPG games with newer graphics your going to spend a couple bucks. I am a big fan of alienware but they are a bit on the expensive side. If that is not your cup of tea grab a dell and just make sure you get at least 1 gig of RAM and 512 mb graphics card. 3 GHz processor would be helpful

Depending on your budget, just buy something that closely resembles either the Budget box or the Hot Rod.
