I can vaguely remember my parents celebrating the "Miracle on Ice", and I have clear memories of the Mt St Helens eruption (watching it on tv). That's as far back as I can go. What about you?

I was in elementary school and an announcement came on over the overhead speakers saying President JFK had been shot. Although traumatic, it was the showing of the Vietnam War documentary on television that had more of an impact on me. I don't really remember if it was Walter Cronkite who narrated the documentary, but it went on for hours. I was transfixed to the television . It was the first time war images were shown and all throughout the evening warnings would come on stating "you are about to see graphic details". I can still see various images in my mind. I remember crying, praying and feeling grateful that I wasn't over there. War is a terrible thing.

I should remember Elvis dying, since I remember my sister's first day of school the year before that, and my first day of school only weeks after Elvis died.

But that's not the answer.

Terry Fox's Marathon of Hope began in April 1980, and it was right away a national story. It happened over a few months as well. He stopped the run in Thunder Bay and died of the cancer which claimed his leg in June 1981.

It wasn't national but it was a state thing that they might stop delivering milk (in the 80s) Maybe it was just a local issue but it was definately a big deal.
