I am a drawer/painter (and i wish:philantropist...). Am working on a 'project' (concerning 'grey')...always thought it to be '7' or 14...just wondering, if somebody could give me (the-never-all-to-corect-answer...)

About 16 shades of gray on a gray scale.

You can read about the Zone System that Ansel Adams (photographer) created some decades ago. It deals with the way grey tones are represented on photographic papers. It might give you another reference point for your project:
