Seriously though. This is not a joke. A friend of mine is rather overweight, and she's going snowboarding, and swears that she will hurt less than me. What are you thoughts?

I live in Louisiana so snow boarding is pretty much out for me. But, I am fat and I used to be fatter. I used to weigh 538 pounds and now I've lost 155 pounds back to 382 pounds. Although, the last time that I fell on my face it hurt like hell. The fat to bone ratio isn't great enough to keep me from pain coming hard and fast. And then again I wasn't falling on my face through a snow bank either was I?

The internal damage might be lessened by the padding of fat, but, since the pain receptors (nociceptors) are in the outer layers of skin, it won't make any difference to the pain. It will still hurt, but there is less chance of damage, except, perhaps to the snowboard.
Also, walking in the snow, there is more chance of an overweight person twisting their knee or turning an ankle.

Actually, I think she is wrong. Her bones have a lot more pressure on them, mainly her back. While you are more likely to break a bone in a hard impact, she is more likely to suffer small injuries (muscle sprains, back pain, etc.) from smaller impacts.

Another thing, she will possibly be tired much faster than you are, which could cause her to be less coordinated.

I was over 400lbs, I've lost over 200 lbs, and I guess it is safe to say I never fell on my face. So I guess you can say it does in some way absorb the impact.

My thoughts are that this is ridiculous reasoning. When you fall you hurt no matter your size and as far as I know there is no level of difference between people of great girth versus someone with less girth.

I would say it would hurt more, more weight behind the impact. But if your her friend you should not be concerned with that.
