take out the common factor of (x + y) and you end up with (3 + a). Multiply out to check answer.

(x + y)(3 + a)=
3x + 3y + ax + ay=
3(x+y) + a(x+y)

Factor by grouping

3(x + y) + a( x + y)

(3 + a)(x + y)

(x+y)(3+a)

Once you identified the common factor you get it.
(^-^) = Happy face

3(^-^) + a(^-^)

Common factor above is (^-^)

then factoring is
(^-^) (3+a)

take out x+y
