I believe only four U.S. states have the "American" accent. South Dakota is one of them. I believe the Northern Plains accent is neutral, but in the countryside the words tend to run together. Its been said that Americans sound like they are trying to swallow an egg while speaking ( according to foreigners ). I appreciate any American accent that is direct and true to its origins. However, I don't appreciate a white suburban child speaking as if he comes from a ghetto. My point is pop culture tends to blend the accents across the nation thanks to communication and travel.

There are many indeed. The standard accent for broadcasting used to be a Midwestern one. It's okay, and it communicates to a broad audience. It's the one we grew up hearing on tv and radio.

To listen to, I am fond of a number of different regional accents and dialects. Accents from Texas and Oklahoma sound like home for me, as I grew up in California's Central Valley, but each region has its own music.

Fer shure!

I'm from california where the accents are all mixed up. I think the "American accent" is wonderful and unique. The other accents out there such as British and Irish are trippy as well. No not all californians are valley girls and surfers.

It definately depends where in the US the person is from.

Boston accents have always seemed a bit trashy to me.
I think west coasters don't have much of an accent at all.
Southern accents can be really charming or really repulsive.
Northern accents (like Minnesota) definately have a bit of a funny sound th them as well.

I'd say overall the American accent isn't really seen as an accent. But nothing says sexy like a Bristish accent.

There is no american accent. If you mean southern and northern that's one thing, but the language has been mangled so much with slang and abbreviaions, decent english is very hard to come by. For an English major, or a serial American it could be disturing, to others, they have more important things in their lives to think about.
