i hate to tell you, some peoples answers are close but not correct.
burns to the body can be very serious.

if you burn any part of your body and for example the hands.
firstly remove any clothing or jewelry unless it is sticking to the skin and therefore seek medical assistance

otherwise place burn area under cold running water for a minimum 15 mins
20 mins for chemical burns
30 mins for bitumen burns

now if the burn is larger than 25-30 cm in diameter and 2mm thick
you must seek medical assistance as the burn can damage the skin.

these is a link also below that will help.

Do not use ICE or TOOTHPASTE instead stick it straight away under a running tap of room temperature water. The reason is the running water takes away the heat from the area, do this for at least 10 minutes. The ice may cause more damage so dont use it. I would probably then go seek medical advice. Then when back home, get a hold of an aloe vera plant, pull off a stalk and rub some of that into it, so long as the burn is not too deep. A light gauze over the top of the burn can be used and a light bandage over the top of that. It all depends on how bad your burn is. Go talk to a pharmacist.

a hard, red area likely means you have a deep burn and the top layer of your skin is seared. this is likely to be a painful healing process over several weeks, unfortunately.

definitely ice it for 15-20 minute intervals as long as it hurts. take a break after that long so that you don't freeze your skin, then ice it again if needed.

take acetaminophen or ibuprofen for pain, don't take more than the label says to, ESPECIALLY acetaminophen (tylenol) because it is easy to overdose on tylenol and damage your liver. keep your hand higher than your shoulder so that swelling is limited. drink lots of fluid to help your body deal with the healing process.

KEEP THE SKIN INTACT over the burn area as long as possible-it is a natural bandage. Don't poke it or squeeze it!
If the burn is over a large area, like your entire palm, you probably should check with your doctor.

Run it under cold water for a few minutes. Then apply aloe vera or burn salve on the burn.
Then wrap your hand with loose gauze and tape it in place to protect it.
If you are not allergic to it, take an anti-inflammatory, such as Ibuprofen, to ease the swelling for a while.

run cold water over it and then put some Neosporin (or some other off-brand antibiotic ointment made for burns) on it.

***NEVER put ice on a burn. DUH! the compounds in a piece of freezing ice are too harsh for a delicate burn.
