I went to physical therapy about 3 years ago, but for a different problem associated with the same knee. I had a build up of a fluid underneath my knee cap and it had pulled a little off track. The problem went away and now the same knee is hurting again but in different places. I'm also a competative dancer and have been for 13 years and have put off seeing a doctor because i dont want my injury to end my career.

this is very common. you need to consult your family physician, and he will probably refer you to physical therapy. if he doesn't you should request physical therapy. Your therapist will get you a knee brace to stabilize your knee, and he will teach you exercises to strengthen the muscles that prevent your knee from "slipping." Physical therapy usually will fix the problem completely, and should be the first defense. If it doesn't work, then you may have to consider surgery.

I recently injured my knee, and felt as though my kneecap was sliding out of place. Actually, it was loose cartiledge that would get caught in certain places, and I could move it around.

Go see a doctor. The knee is not something you ever want to mess around with. He will likely recommend physical therapy, which will strengthen the musculature around your knee if it is, in fact, "slipping".
