There is a difference between acute stress and chronic stress.

You experience acute stress when a rabid dog chases you. This stress is good since you instinctively climbed a tree to avoid the rabid dog. The acute stress was necessary for survival.

Chronic stress keeps you in that tree long after the rabid dog is gone. This stress has no purpose for survival and causes physiological problems that are often detrimental to your overall heath.

Eventually there is usually some sort of physical problem that results.
