5(x – 5) + 8x = 9x – 25
distribute five
5x - 25 +8x = 9x - 25
add 5x+8x
13x -25 = 9x -25
Subtract 9x from both sides
4x -25 = -25
add 25 to both sides
4x = 0
divide both sides by 4
x=0

TO CHECK THE SOLUTION PLUG 0 IN FOR X
5(x – 5) + 8x = 9x – 25
5(0 – 5) + 8(0) = 9(0) – 25
0-5 = -5 and 8 times 0 = 0
so
-25 = 9(0)-25
9 times 0 also equals 0
so
-25 = -25

Since your left side matches up w/ the right side
Your answer is therefore correct and you may do the happy Dance =))

5(x – 5) + 8x = 9x – 25

subtract 8x for both sides
5(x-5) = x - 25

distribute
5x - 25 = x - 25

add 25
5x = x

subtract x
4x = 0

divide 4
x = 0

2007-04-13 17:52:14 · answer #4 · answered by      7 · 0 0

5(x – 5) + 8x = 9x – 25

First, distribute the 5:

5x – 25 + 8x = 9x – 25

Now combine like terms:

13x - 25 = 9x - 25

Now isolate the variable, subtract 9x from the right and add 25 to the right:

4x = 0

It should be pretty clear now, but divide both sides by 4 and you get:

x = 0

open up the backets
5x - 25 + 8x = 9x - 25

simplify,
13x - 25 = 9x - 25

next, you move x to one side
13x - 9x = -25 + 25

simplify,
4x = 0

answer: x = 0

5x - 25 +8x = 9x -25
5x-25+25 +8x = 9x-25+25

5x +8x = 9x
13x = 9x
-9x -9x

4x = 0
x = 0

5x - 25 + 8x = 9x - 25
5x - 25 + 25 + 8x = 9x - 25 + 25
5x + 8x = 9x
13x = 9x

x has to equal 0.
