An annulment is a legal procedure which cancels a marriage between a man and a woman. Annulling a marriage is as though it is completely erased – legally, it declares that the marriage never technically existed and was never valid. A divorce, or legal dissolution of a marriage, is the ending of a valid marriage between a man and a woman returning both parties to single status with the ability to remarry. Every state has its own laws regarding annulment and divorce. Many people seek annulments to allow them to remarry in a church again.

There are two types of annulments, there is the relgious annulment and the civil annulment. The reglious one disolve a marriage in the church of the faith it was blessed in. It is not a legal disillisionment of marriage however, for that one HAS to get either a civil annulment based on fraud or non-consumation of the marriage, or one has to get a divorce. Only a civil annulment or divorce can end a marriage. The religious annulment only means that the church no longer recognizes that couple ever being married.

An important difference to note. Annulment is religious not legal. (at least I am not aware of a legal condition of annulment)
An annulment is a declaration that the marriage was never valid.
A couple cannot decide to "have an annulment". There has to be some existing condition to invalidate the marriage.
Annulments are not always granted. A rather large example in history would be Henry VIII of England, who was refused an annulment. This resulted in the Anglican/Catholic split.

A divorce ends a marriage. A legal annulment, however, means that the marriage never existed. You can get divorced for pretty much any reason, but you have to certain grounds for an annulment, such as the other person already being married or being coerced into the marriage.
In the Catholic Church, an annulment is necessary if you’ve been married before and want to remarry. An annulment from the church is different from a civil divorce, however. A Catholic annulment means that although the marriage took place, it was void--you need grounds for a Catholic annulement, too.
When the Catholic Church refused to give Henry VIII an annulment so he could remarry, he left the church and founded his own!

When you get an annulment it is as if you were never married to that person, where as a divorce is just the ending of said marriage.

A divorce stays in the civic record. An annulment is as if the marriage never existed per the church.

In a annulment, you both assume the legal status that you had before marrage. In a divorce, you permanently separate, are no longer legally married, and divide property, pay alimony and child support, etc.

Annulment is for a marriage which has not yet been consumated. A divorce is when it has been.
